What is a Caregiver Intensity Score
The Caregiver Intensity Score is a scientifically developed and statistically validated tool used to quickly gauge how things are going for us as caregivers. Caregiving intensity is calculated by measuring the things that are most challenging about caregiving (things like financial stress and family conflict) against the things that may be lightening your caregiving load (we call them ‘buffers’), like support from your job or from the community.
Each question matters (don’t worry - there aren’t a lot of them), and there are no right or wrong answers. Knowing your score will help validate how it’s all going – and it will get you access to things that can help. It can also give you a simple way to let other people in your life know how you’re doing so they know best how to help.
Being a caregiver isn’t easy, whether you’ve been doing it for years or became one overnight. And caregiving can feel like a rollercoaster – some days are bright and full of purpose, while other feel completely overwhelming. These quick questions are designed to help give you the tools you need to manage your situation – whatever it may be.

My tip is to keep a journal and a folder of information you collect from your loved one. Example; phone numbers, appts dates, medication lists, special dates; and even a timeline journal of your feelings. One is building information on your loved one and the other is to allow you to vent when you can’t share your feelings with anyone else.
Write emails to family members and friends who ask how to help. I am more honest and composed when I write these. This is where I lay out the true status of my moms condition and my dads, as the primary caregiver, ability to take extra help from people or what he is truly up against. I serve as the family correspondent and streamlining communications helps avoid a million different conversations.
Terminal is an awful prognosis; I try not to look ahead too much - when he’s having a bad time I buckle down to just support him. I don’t share my fears or unscheduled tears; I do go to my friends for reassurance and bolstering my path.
I feel encouraged by the effort the person which I do the caregiving for tries so hard to manage as much as possible. I admire his abilities to make the most of each day.
It’s ok to ask for help. Asking for help is not saying that you can’t do it all but allowing people who want to support you the opportunity to help. A lot of people want to help but don’t know what they can do to support you or the person who you are caring for.
